Combating Terrorism (WECTU)
The
Welsh Extremism and Counter Terrorism Unit (WECTU) is a
collaboration of the four Welsh Police Forces.
WECTU will enable the Police Forces of Wales to:
- Review and improve the current structures and resources.
- Work smarter in our response to threat from National and
International terrorism, as well as tackling extremism.
- Work with our partners in communities to build confidence and
trust to target and disrupt terrorists and extremists.
WECTU respond to the threats posed by international terrorism
and domestic extremism and they are driven by the Government’s
Counter Terrorism Strategy known as ‘CONTEST’.
You can find out more about the Counter Terrorism Strategy and
download the strategy documents by following this link.
CONTEST is based around four principles known as
the 'Four Ps': Pursue, Prevent, Protect and Prepare.
- Pursue terrorists wherever they are and stop terrorist
attacks
- Prevent people from becoming terrorists or supporting violent
extremism
- Protect the UK by strengthening our defences against
terrorism
- Prepare to respond to an attack to lessen its impact
Forming part of WECTU, the Ports Policing Unit provides a permanent
presence at our main port of Holyhead and is a key link in the
national defence against terrorism. In addition, the Ports Policing
Unit is also responsible for the policing of the many small
airstrips and marinas across North Wales.
