nimnweekThe success of last year's "Not in My Neighbourhood Week" has prompted a second annual government initiative that aims to show residents how they can make their communities safer and help to reduce crime.

A huge variety of activities are being run across the country to celebrate and showcase all the work being done to make our communities safer, and North Wales is no different, with many events being planned across the force area by the Neighbourhood Policing Teams in conjunction with Neighbourhood Watch.

Insp Martin Pendleton said: "This is a dedicated week of activity by police and partners such as Neighbourhood Watch and local authorities to raise public awareness of all the hard work being done to tackle crime and anti social behaviour and to increase the public's confidence and to encourage them to engage with us."

"Crime levels in North Wales are amongst the lowest in the country, and we are very proud to have achieved significant reductions in all crime. These improvements have been achieved through the hard work and commitment of North Wales Police officers and staff working alongside other agencies."

The recent British Crime Survey statistics show that nationally, crime has fallen by 18%. However, the gap between perceptions of crime and the reality is still too wide and too often the public aren't aware of the work being done in their communities to make their area a safer place to live.

Not in My Neighbourhood Week is designed to;

  • Foster a sense of empowerment in local communities and raise awareness of the huge range of work done, day in, day out, to keep crime down and make communities safe.
  • Provide a communications platform to organise and publicise local events and activities under the Not in my Neighbourhood Week banner.
  • Bring together residents, wider communities representatives, role models and professionals on the frontline to tackle the issues that are of most concern to the public.
  • Provide an opportunity to further strengthen the importance of local partnerships and the police responding to the needs of the local community.

Insp Pendleton added: "We urge the public to look out for local activity and to get involved."
