Traders selling air weapons in North Wales are being warned they could face penalties of up to £5,000 or imprisonment if they fail to register with the Police.

On the 1st of October, 2007, a change will be made to the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 on restrictions on the sale of Air Weapons. From this date onwards, anyone selling air weapons by way of a trade or business must be registered with the Police as a Firearms Dealer.

"Previously, there was no need for anyone to register as a Firearms Dealer to sell this type of weapon," said Sergeant Andy Griffiths from North Wales Police. "Now fishing tackle shops, gift shops, hardware stores and others who sell air weapons will all be affected by the change in law, and will have to register with us."

Registration as a Firearms Dealer is made by applying to the Firearms Licensing Department of North Wales Police. It costs £150, and the registration lasts for 3 years.

Individuals caught trading in air weapons without being registered after the 1st of October could face penalties of up to £5,000 or up to 12 months imprisonment.

Anyone wanting further information regarding the change are welcome to contact North Wales Police's Firearms Licensing Department, on 01745 539394. The offices are open between 10.00am and 3.00pm, Monday to Friday. Individuals can also write to the Department at 116 Victoria Road, Prestatyn, Denbighshire, LL197TD.
