    Southsea crime awareness campaign

    Hello

There has been a recent increase in the number of Burglaries in the Southsea area of Broughton. These Burglaries have been happening at all times of day and night and in the majority of cases, offenders are simply walking into houses through unlocked or insecure windows and doors. Offenders are in and out within minutes and are taking whatever property they can get hold of with them.

The Broughton NPT has delivered letters to over 650 houses in the Southsea area to warn residents about these crimes and have included information on crime prevention and also contact numbers on how to report any suspicious activity in the area. This is just a reminder to residents to be alert to keeping their house and car keys safe and also keeping anything of value out of sight and marking it with a UV property marker. If you would like a marker or further crime prevention advice on this subject then feel free to contact any of the local policing team for the area on their contact numbers on the North Wales Police web site. Exactly the same can be done to report criminal activity named or anonymously or you can report any information to CrimeStopppers on 0800555111.

Residents are reminded to make use of any door chains, house/window alarms, and window and door locks (especially on the ground floor) and to consider installing or updating any security lighting and CCTV.

    Thanks

    Rhys

  • Wrexham Industrial Estate - Relaunch of Security Forum and Radio Link.

Mr Allan Hankin Chairperson of the Wrexham Industrial Estate Security Forum with PC 134 Pete Barrett and PC 1586 Bob Powell.

    Security Forum/Radio Link Relaunch

The security forum was formed in 2001 during which the radio link system was set up.  The security forum was organised by the Industrial estate police officers but its chairperson is voted for by the members of the forum, the current chairperson is Mr. Allan HANKIN.

Following the initial launch of the security forum and radio link system in 2001, many of the original radios had since fallen into disrepair and were not being used, a decision was made to redistribute those viable radios and reissue them to those businesses that had twenty four hour security cover, these key businesses would form the framework of the radio link and a cascade alert system.

The Cascade Alert System relies on information being cascaded down from nominated key companies via the radio link system.  It’s based on the old firemans knock when you alert your neighbour who in turn alerts theirs and so on.  Each key company has a list of neighbouring businesses which can be alerted by telephone of anything untoward.

Those businesses participating in the scheme maintain a log of all incidents of note and good practice to be shared at subsequent security forum meetings.

Radios are issued by the Wrexham Industrial Estate police officers who monitor the radio link frequency.  The Wrexham Borough Council CCTV control room are issued with a radio and can also be contacted.

The aims of the Security Forum are:

To promote and increase the safety of members and the public.

To reduce the levels of actual and perceived crime, thus improving the quality of life and safety of residents on the estate.

    To improve communications between members.

To regulate the management of the radio link system.

  • INTRODUCTION - WREXHAM INDUSTRIAL ESTATE POLICING TEAM.

The Policing team consists of two full time police officers in the role of Community Beat Managers PC 1586 Bob Powell and PC 134 Pete Barrett  dedicated to policing the Wrexham Industrial Estate and the residential community of Pentre Maelor.  The team comes under the command of the Territorial Inspector for Wrexham North District, policed from Coedpoeth and Gresford Police Stations.  The team is based on the Industrial Estate and shares an office with Rebecca Morgan who is the Wrexham Industrial Estate’s Coordinator as part of Wrexham Borough Councils Economic Development Department. The Policing is funded by businesses on the Estate by way of monetary contributions which varies dependant upon the size and rateable value of each business. The Coordination Unit liaises with businesses to encourage ongoing contributions and in the past Rebecca has utilized her knowledge and expertise to facilitate this process. This working partnership has proved invaluable in forging and maintaining links with the businesses, and the forming of the Business and Security forums.

    Historic

In 2001 it was recognised that the expansion and growth of Wrexham Industrial Estate would be better served by a dedicated policing team in order to meet the specific needs of the business community.  Working in partnership with the local authority and resident businesses a plan was formed and initial funding obtained from various sources, a steering group comprising of business members and subsequent business forum were formed and the funding allowed extra security measures to be implemented, such as a radio link system, and nine Local Authority monitored CCTV cameras.

    Geography

Wrexham Industrial Estate covers approximately 550 hectares of relatively flat land which has developed separate from Wrexham town approximately 2km to the west.  It has developed since the 1940’s on the site of a wartime munitions factory.  Amidst

the industrial development is the Pentre Maelor housing estate consisting of 104 dwellings which were built in 1947 to house workers, the majority of the houses are now privately owned with just a few remaining council owned properties.  The surrounding countryside is low lying agricultural land and to the south east the river Clywedog valley forms a narrow strip of flood plain.

The industrial estate can be accessed from five different locations by road, there are two main routes:  From the north along Hugmore lane and the main A534 Wrexham to Nantwich Road, and in the south from Cefn road and Bedwell road via cross Lanes, these two main access routes are due to be improved by a major road development programme planned to start late 2010.  In the south east access can be gained along Oak Road from the village of Isycoed and in the north east along Ridleywood road from Ridleywood, in the west access along the Redwither Lane can be made by light vehicles only.  Most heavy goods vehicles use the main north and south routes as the others are unsuitable or have weight restrictions.

    Businesses

Although there is the inevitable fluctuation of businesses coming and going, the Industrial Estate accommodates around 300 businesses employing over 7000 people.

The Aims of Wrexham Industrial Estate policing Team are to

    ·        Reduce crime and Fear of crime ensuring a safe and secure environment for resident’s employees and businesses by providing a high visibility Police presence.

    ·        Develop and maintain an effective working partnership with the resident and business community through Security Forum and Neighbourhood Policing meetings along with other means of communication including Wrexham Industrial Estate website, newsletters etc.

    ·        To prevent/ reduce repeat victimisation by offering appropriate target hardening measures.

  • PCSO Phil Jones entertains at the St Davids Day Celebrations in Royal Court, Gwersyllt

On 2nd March at 10:30 PCSO Phil Jones attended a St Davids day celebration coffee morning held at Royal Court.

Many elderly residents some of which were wearing Welsh traditional costumes came to watch PCSO Phil Jones play some Welsh tunes on his flute which went down really well and had the residents singing along.

Also in attendance was Councillor Arfon Jones who thoroughly enjoyed himself. The morning was a complete success and strengthens the link between the Police and the vulnerable people of Gwersyllt.

More Functions and events will be held throughout 2010 so watch this space.

Broughton families Health and Wellbeing event

    Hello

The Broughton NPT has been working with local youth workers to set up an advice and awareness event aimed at youths and their parents within the local community. It has been created after the NPT raised concerns with local youth workers who shared these concerns as well as the ones residents raised at the recent PACT meeting. Since then it has been expanded to include a range of issues that youths or parents may want advice or support with.

The event is aimed to offer help from things like exam stress, substance misuse, self harming and sexual awareness. The event will have representatives from the NPT, youth workers, the info shop, ‘In2Change’, and inspire. These agencies are aimed to offer specific advice in certain fields of work. That way parents or youths can speak to the representatives on a 1-2-1 basis.

The event will take place between 6.30 – 8.30pm on Monday 22nd March 2010 at the Brynteg memorial Hall, Quarry Road, Brynteg. For more information contact a member of your local policing team.

    Thanks

    Broughton Together – a multi-cultural awareness event

    Hello

The Broughton NPT are currently organising a multi-cultural awareness event along with the Broughton strategy office to be held at the Brynteg Memorial Hall on Monday 1st March 2010 at 3.30pm. The event is on St David's day and will be a chance to celebrate some welsh traditions as well as all other cultures and backgrounds in the area.

The event is free and will have a variety of activities/displays such as henna tattoos, food tasting, samba band lessons and demos, African dancing, guide dogs, the fire engine, face painting and traditional welsh food, bird box making, orienteering, music and maybe some dancing. There will also be a wide range of partner agencies giving advice and passing out information to those who attend.

It should be a great way to bring the whole community together and help build bridges between different social groups/backgrounds or minority groups/backgrounds of all ages, gender, race, sexual orientation, disability or religious beliefs. The event is open to everyone and if you would like to attend feel free.

    Thanks

  • Litter Pick with Llay "Get up and Play"!

Over the February half term youths from Llays "Get up and play scheme" took part in a litter pick around the area of Llays resource centre and Llay CP school and the Market Square area. The youths all volunteered to help out and collected several bin bags full of rubbish which were collected by street scene. The youths were given litter pickers that Wrexham Council donated for the afternoon. PCSO Lydia Johnson organised the event alongside the youth workers and helped out on the day. The youths will hopefully be taking part in another litter pick soon.

  • E-Crime awareness presentation, Llay

I am the PCSO for the Llay area and have co-organised an event with PC Ryan Edwards. The event is an E-crime awareness presentation which will be held in MWL, Davy Way Llay Industrial Estate on the 25th of February. Llays neighbourhood policing team have invited companies from The Llay Industrial Estates to attend. The idea behind the awareness presentation is that many businesses are at risk of becoming victims of an increasingly popular crime called E-crime. E-Crime generally refers to a criminal activity where a computer or computer network is the source, tool, target, or place of a crime. The Wales Benchmarking Survey carried out on behalf of Welsh Assembly Government’s E-Crime Wales Unit found that 23% of businesses questioned had experienced one or more incidents of computer related crime in the last year.

The presentation has been organised by PC Ryan Edwards and PCSO Lydia Johnson but will be delivered by North Wales Police Specialist Officer dedicated to warning and informing businesses about E-crime.
Andrea Barnard is the Regional Business E-Crime Liaison Officer for North Wales and is one of four officers who have been appointed throughout Wales. Andrea works part of E-crime Wales which is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government. The aim is to strengthen partnerships and communication links between businesses and be on hand to advise firms of the threat posed by E-crime and the best ways to combat it.

E-crime continues to pose a real threat. At the beginning of this year a report published by the Federation of Small Businesses revealed that 54% of businesses have been a victim of fraud or online crime. It also stated that the figure was likely to grow unless there is a pro-active response by businesses.

The specialist E-crime team appointed is armed with the knowledge to help businesses report and investigate all aspects of E-crime. The officers are committed to equipping local businesses with the knowledge and tools to enable them to become aware, vigilant, informed and safe from the destructive effects of E-crime in all its forms which can include fraud, blackmail, forgery and embezzlement.

  • Southsea’s Multi Agency Environmental Action Day – March 29th 2010

Southsea’s Multi Agency Environmental Action Day

    Hello

Myself and PCSO Scott Ashton have been working with a range of partner agencies in the Broughton area to set up an ‘Environmental Action Day’ that is due to take place on Monday 29th March 2010 between 11am and 3pm.

The event will be split into 3 different ‘zones’ within the Southsea village and will include around 250 houses in total (however anyone is welcome to come and take part).

Each ‘zone’ will contain a skip that residents will be able to use to dispose of any unwanted waste or rubbish from their property. This is an effort to help residents to tidy up their neighbourhood, to give those that don’t wouldn’t normally be able to hire a skip out the change to dispose of larger items and also a way to reduce the chance of any arson that may occur due to these items being left in resident’s gardens or houses. There will be a team of volunteers that will help remove all litter from the streets, grassed areas and pathways within each ‘zone’.

The ‘zone’s’ have been chosen due to some residents being vulnerable or disabled who may benefit from this event and also some area that fly tipping and littering have been a problem in the past. The zones chosen are –

Bryn Goleu (near Arfryn and the garages)

Bryn Rhedyn / Bryn Hedd grassed area

School Lane (on the grassed area)

The zones will be available for residents in the surrounding houses to use the skips and also take advantage of gardening and home improvement workshops that will be put on and a way to recycle any unwanted scrap metal. The money from the scrap metal will be used and put back into the community at some point in the future and will not go to the cost of the environmental action day as this is funded by partner agencies.

Community House Café on Darby Road, Brynteg will be supplying some refreshments for the volunteers as all partner agencies are keen to help support local businesses. If you would like to take part in the event, please contact a member of the Broughton policing team or a member of staff from NACRO / Broughton Strategy Office.

The local PCSO’s will be attending the event to offer crime prevention advice to residents, help take part in the clean up and to provide NPT contact details. NACRO, the Housing Office, the Strategy Office, North Wales Fire and Rescue service, WCBC/Street Scene, Keep wales tidy, the youth service and the probation service are all involved and will be supplying either funding, materials or volunteers to help out.

Hopefully the day will be a success and I will add some photo’s at the end of March!

    Thanks

    Rhys

  • Brynteg youth club's half term fun

Gaffney’s youth club - half term fun!

    Hello

Gaffney’s youth club have been running at full steam this half term to keep the youths as busy as possible. They have been putting on craft workshops, lots of physical activities and have even brought in a professional graffiti artist to help the youths in the area create a graffiti mural for the walls at the youth club. The work started on the mural on 15th February 2010 and saw myself and PCSO Scott Ashton joining in the mess by setting up the starting blocks for the graffiti canvas. The work continued over the next few days allowing all youths (some parents as well) a chance to test out their new found skills all in the name of art. The mural was completed on Wednesday 17th February and will soon sit along one of the walls within the youth club building. It’s been a great chance for all age groups to work on something together in the area that will be there to view for a long time. The youths that took part all seemed to enjoy working on the project and it kept everyone busy for a good few hours. I think it’s a great idea and hope that working

Alongside PCSO Poppy Hadfield-Jones 2881 and Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant Dawn Samuels 1495, Mike Jones and Kevin Edwards from Wrexham Council’s Street Scene and Community Councillor Paul Gaade attended the event.

The purpose of an EVA is to focus police and partnership agencies attention on continual improvement of the visual environment of your neighbourhood, making it a more pleasant place to work, live and play.

EVA’s are conducted jointly by your local Neighbourhood Policing Team, representatives from your local Council under the Pride in your Streets Initiative together with your local elected Councillor, Community Councillors and local residents should they wish to attend.

An EVA is conducted by walking around the local neighbourhood, looking at environmental issues affecting the area and concluding with up to 5 priorities which will be monitored and completed by allocated agencies.

    The issues identified by the Audit Team were as follows;

    1)     Hedges to be cut back to avoid obstructions.

    2)     Signposts on Church Road/Quaker’s Way to be altered or taken away if redundant. Transfet on cycling sign, Francis Lane to be replaced.

    4)     Wall in front of Dee Villas to be assessed and repaired/rebuilt if necessary.

    5)     Leaves in front of Dee Villas to be cleared.

    6)     Dog Fouling to be monitored and enforcements issued if necessary by NPT and local Enforcement Officers.

The above issues have been given response times of between two weeks and six months. Please check for updates on the North Wales Police Website under Wrexham North, Holt.

If you would like any more information with regards to your local EVA or if you have a specific issue you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to contact either PCSO Poppy Hadfield-Jones 2881 from Holt Neighbourhood Policing Team, Wrexham Pride in your Streets on 01978 298989 or your local elected Councillor/Community Council.
