What is CSE?
CSE is a form of child sexual abuse.
If a person – or group of people – coerce, manipulate or deceive someone under the age of 18 into sexual activity, it’s child sexual exploitation.
- Making a child carry out sexual activity for some form of reward (gifts, money, affection, accommodation etc)
- Producing indecent material (such as photographs, films or other technology) involving children
- Grooming a young person, whether by face-to-face contact or over the phone/internet or social media
- Trafficking young people for sexual purposes – trafficking does not only mean moving someone from one country to another against their will, it can be as basic as making a car journey to a local hotel
Whatever the circumstances, there is always something keeping the victim under the offender’s control. Many young people who are being abused do not realise it and will not ask for help. They often see themselves as willing participants.
Children do not volunteer to be sexually exploited. They cannot consent to being abused and whatever their background or behaviour, they do not bring it upon themselves. It’s time for it to stop. Think, spot and speak out against abuse.
North Wales Police and Barnardo’s are currently working in partnership to tackle Child Sexual Exploitation.
