Marathon Man Gaz

The Deputy Head of ICT Infrastructure, Gareth “Gaz” Roberts will be swapping his keyboard and mouse this year for trainers as he attempts to complete a series of half and full marathons…all for charity

As of March, Gareth will start his year of running to raise money for three charities. The organisation Hearing Link, as many who know him are aware, supported his family when his father suddenly started losing his hearing two years ago.

He has also expressed his support for Aŵyr Las, an NHS exclusive to North Wales, and CreateaSmile Cymru, which supports families who have children with learning difficulties.

In the past, Gareth and his sister, Sioned Mair, have raised £2,000 for charity through sponsored runs.

Gareth believes this will be his “biggest challenge yet.” He added that he has a “humble target of £200 for each charity”.

Gareth’s first run takes place on Anglesey on March 5 where he will attempt to run 13 miles in two and a half hours. This will be followed by many more races throughout the year culminating in the Snowdon marathon at the end of October.

He said: “Last year my sister did the London marathon and because of that, sibling rivalry got the better of me and I signed up for the Snowdon event which is said to be more challenging!”

Gareth’s training regime involves running three times a week, even and using his ICT skills!

He explained: “Although I am built more for rugby than running, you can never judge a runner by their body shape.

“I’ve got phone applications and I’m using things like Fitbits to monitor training as well as creating my own Facebook page. I want people to know that while I’m doing this, I’ll be having fun.”
