National Volunteers Week: North Wales Police Cadet Coordinator

As we celebrate National Volunteers Week we’d like to introduce you to some of our own officers and staff who give up their time to help in their communities.

The deaths of two young people close to Chris Perkins’ heart persuaded him to give his spare time to help other youngsters.

In 2005 Chris got involved with the 3rd Rhos-on-Sea Scout Group, and having led the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts he now finds himself as the nominated Chair for the group and is on the Snowdonia and Anglesey Scouts Advisory Appointments Committee ensuring boys and girls of all ages get a host of opportunities.

“I was studying for a diploma in education and needed to find a way of teaching children. Scouting gave me that access,” he said, admitting that some of his inspiration has come from Bear Grylls.

Chris has also been actively involved with the North Wales Police Cadets taking on the role of Central Leader in 2015 and then in 2019 he was appointed as Coordinator for the force. As a result he coordinates 24 leaders and nearly 100 cadets

Despite the difficulties facing all organisations as a result of COVID-19, Chris is encouraging the Scouts and the Cadets to get involved with virtual challenges – meeting online and with ideas like indoor camping, photographic competitions and quizzes etc.

Chris, a father of four and grandpa of two, is currently in his 40th year of police service having been a police officer for 30 years and then a PCSO.

“I have always given my time free. Ever since my nephew died of a drugs overdose and one of my scouts passed away after a short illness I have chosen to help young people,” said Chris who spends at least five hours a week doing voluntary work.

“I am like a surrogate parent to some of them. I love it when I see them going on to greater things.”

His licence to drive a minibus also sees his services being called upon to transport people around the country; this has included him being part of the Support Team involved with Police Unity Cycle Tour and the Snowdonia Sevens.
