Support at NWP

We recognise that life’s not always easy.

If you find yourself in difficult times we’re here to lend support – whether it’s physical, mental or emotional.  Our Occupational Health Unit, Wellbeing programme and Force Chaplain all provide the assistance you might need.  Plus joining the Police Federation or UNISON trade union entitles you to all kinds of support, including legal and financial advice. 

On the other hand, when things go well we like to celebrate them.  As well as our Rewards and Recognition programme, we hold an annual awards ceremony where we take pride in the excellent work done throughout the year. 

We’re all part of one #policingfamily – during good times and bad. 

Internal support

We know that people need to be at their best personally to perform well professionally.  Our in-house wellbeing programme ‘Lifestyle Matters’ provides advice and support in four major areas:

Healthy Body

  • Our Occupational Health Unit offers health screening for anyone who would like it, and annual medicals for certain roles
  • Our Force Physical Training Instructor offers fitness support to individuals and groups, whether you’re a new probationer going through training, or a member of staff struggling to reach the required fitness standard for your role
  • We can help fund a course of physiotherapy if you need it
  • We can refer you to the Police Treatment Centres in various UK locations if you need treatment to get back to full health following illness or injury (police officers, PCSOs, Specials and Custody Detention Officers)
  • The NWP Sports Association includes a wide range of sporting clubs and competitions – join in and keep fit and healthy while making new friends!
  • A number of stations have gyms and fitness classes on-site
  • As part of the Cycle to Work scheme you can get help buying a bike for your daily commute

Healthy Mind

  • Counselling services are available for anyone experiencing difficult times or mental health issues
  • Welfare screening is available for those whose role exposes them to unpleasant and distressing situations
  • Our Mental Health Peer Supporters offer emotional or practical support to colleagues across the Force, acting as a sympathetic ear and directing people to more formal help where necessary
  • Our Volunteer Chaplain offers a friendly confidential 'listening ear' to anyone needing someone to talk to, whatever the situation or subject and irrespective of religious background
  • Information and resources to help you achieve positive mental health

UNISON
