Myth... A Special is just a 'hobby bobby', they can't arrest anyone.
Fact... Special Constables wear the same uniform and use the same equipment as a regular police officer. They have full police powers and can arrest someone in exactly the same way.
Myth... Being a Special Constable is a full-time commitment, I don't have time for it.
Fact... We ask our Specials to commit a minimum of 16 hours per month to the role, usually four hours per week. But some choose to work more than this - often covering a standard ten hour shift with the police officers they're teamed up with. Specials can work a variety of shifts to fit in around their non-police commitments. As policing is a 24/7 job, there's always a shift that will suit you.
Myth... I don't have any qualifications, so I can't join.
Fact... You don't need any formal qualifications to become a Special, just commitment, enthusiasm, patience, compassion and common sense.
Myth... The police only want to recruit young people.
Fact... As Specials bring valuable life experiences, new skills and fresh perspectives into our organisation, we welcome applicants of any age (though you must be over 18). There is no upper age limit.
