What is a Special Constable?

Why be a Special?

Special Constables are just that - special.

They're people from all walks of life who choose to spend their free time helping us to help others. Helping us to improve the communities in which we all live and work. Helping us achieve our vision of a safer North Wales.

They may be at home bringing up a family, in full-time employment, between jobs, studying or retired - but they all give their precious spare time free of charge for the good of the local community.

"I love working in the community.  It’s a great feeling to know you’re making a difference, especially when people come up and tell you how thankful they are for the job you do."

SC Dan McNulty

Why be a Special?

For many Specials, the satisfaction of helping the community is reward enough. That feeling when you get home and know you've made a real difference to somebody today. But it's not the only benefit...

  • You'll develop new skills to take away and use in your daily life
  • You'll gain confidence
  • You'll keep fit and healthy
  • You'll work as part of a close-knit team and make new friends
  • You'll get a unique insight into policing - if you dream of becoming a police officer, being a Special is a great first step

It's not just a one-way relationship – we benefit too by having you with us! And not just because you help us to be more visible in the community at a time when budget cuts are affecting all police forces.

Every one of our Specials - from youngest to oldest - brings a unique set of skills and life experiences to their team, giving our officers new perspectives on the situations they encounter every day.
